Flashback

This was something I'd written while in Hong Kong. Suddenly I feel so tired. I think we all are. Hong Kong does not seem like a very happy city and its dreariness is eating us up. Maybe it's no different from most cities. I only know Perth and not very well at that. Hong Kong is so dirty. So, so dirty. Frighteningly dirty. I'm afraid to touch the bottoms of my shoes, they might be disease ridden by now. The longer I stay in this city the more I love Perth. And suburbia. Not so long ago the thought of suburbia horrified us. But I can see now that streets of repetitious brick and tile is infinitely more desirable than high-rise apartments. No space holding more people than it can sustain can be good for the Earth. We are a cancer, or a virus. I don't say this with blame or bitterness. It's just an observation. At this point, past negativity, past judgement, I've jumped loyalties and am no longer siding with the virus. I am now a part of the cure. It's not exactly a conscious choice. I've just become tired of trying to quieten or ignore the hurt I feel when I witness or partake in this thoughtlessness. I can't be a contributor anymore. Why does it not make other people feel bad? Well, the public transport's really cheap, and some other things are too. That's really the only good thing I can say about Hong Kong. We leave tomorrow. What sweet relief. We check out of the hotel 8.30 tomorrow morn. I wouldn't mind if it was 2am, the sooner the better. I don't think it's Hong Kong I dislike but big cities in general. I couldn't live in a place like this. I don't know if anyone could after living on a tropical island for 17 years. Having known clean air, polite people and colours other than grey and neon, how could you possibly subject yourself to such a dismal quality of life? My opinion of Perth has risen higher than any skyscraper present human silliness could ever build. Seeing a city like this has opened my eyes to how ill this planet is and my understanding of the number "millions" has grown. It's millions of people that have to become aware. Walking through the polluted streets of Hong Kong is like walking through a sea of sleepwalkers who don't even know they're asleep. My dream is to become wealthy enough to live away from the rat race in a self-sustaining environment where, instead of abusing and wasting the planet's abundance, life replenishes itself through natural courses, maintaining a balance that can be kept for generations and where nothing and no one is being fucked over. Away from the madness, the self-deception, the self-destruction. But it's not enough to hide away and turn a blind eye. I’m obliged to stand up and speak out in the hopes of starting a chain reaction, to help more people become aware. So, what's my message? Money is not what we're here for; status is not what we're here for. What we are here for is up to the individual to decide, but those two things are destroying everything good, much faster than anyone knows. Life will go on in one way or another. As cockroaches, maybe, as bacteria, whatever. The Earth itself will live on longer than our imprisoned minds can comprehend. But it's up to us to decide whether humankind wants to continue to be a part of that life. And since our thoughtless ways have meant the extinction or near-eradication of other species it's also up to us to decide whether other life forms should continue too. We've grasped the power to decide for so many species but we continue to deny the responsibilities therein. The human race is a rich teenager who has seen the possibilities of what it can have and do but refuses to acknowledge the consequences, thinking that some parent will bail them out of the shit when things suddenly get out of hand. We put government in the role of parent but governments are no more evolved. The governments reflect the millions and the millions are sleepwalkers. We put God in the role of parent and forget that God gave us Free Will, meaning free to learn whatever lessons we choose to learn, no matter how difficult, no matter how fucked up it gets. No matter what species become extinct along the way. God's not gonna stop us destroying ourselves when we continuously display that it's what we want. It seems hopeless. But all I can do is love my friends and my family, be kind to strangers and be true to myself and hope that my example can change the world.
