"Caarnaustraya!"

  • Mood:
On Sunday I went to the WACA with the Labyrinth and his boys to watch Australia play South Africa. I dug deep into the catacombs of my memory for any valuable crumbs of cricket knowledge but all I could get was that there was a lot less activity on the field during test matches than one dayers. The heat was punishing out there on the grass, but unfortunately no one took their clothes off and ran naked. It happens sometimes, I was told. But there was at least enough activity among the spectators to keep us all entertained, so much so that someone could've hit a six and none of us would've noticed. Towards lunchtime, though, the heat was approaching what I imagine hell would be like if there was a hell so we snuck up onto one of the stands and oh my god it was blissfully cool and from that vantage point the cricketers actually looked like cricketers instead of just a bunch of guys in white standing around. While we were up there a few mexican waves were started up but they would always die when they reached the members stands. The wave would start and the cheering would fire up but as soon as it reached the members stands the cheers automatically flipped to long drawn out boos, as if a switch was flipped on cue. Boo the members, too good for the mexican wave. It was so funny. Don't ask me what the score was by the end of the day. When someone tells me a cricket score I always feel as if I've been slapped with a surprise mathematical question. 4 for 194?...er...how about I answer that with the usual pained blank expression? But anyway, I had a really good time considering how little I actually cared about what happened on the field. Yesterday I helped the Labyrinth decorate his tree. We sang a few Christmas carols while we did it. Well, actually I sang what I knew and he joined in a little bit here and there. "Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of steven, hmm hmm snow came round about, deep and crisp and even. Brightly shone the moon that night though the frost was cruel, hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm, gathering winter fuel..." that's pretty much how it went for all the songs. My two presents for the boys are the first ones under the tree! I couldn't get the Labyrinth a present so we decided I'm giving him a full body oil rub instead.
