You knew me before you ever met me.
The trick is to remember what you have purposefully, impressively, forgotten.
A couple of years or so ago an art initiative called Green Turtle Dreaming visited the island for a few days. They had spent about two years travelling through a few Indonesian islands and some northern coastal communities of Australia, collecting stories and customs that revolved around the Green Sea Turtle. Being the token journo at the time, I got to meet them and interview them. I even joined in with a couple of their activities and I vaguely remember sitting on a beach and talking into a microphone.
Yesterday, I received in the mail a CD made by Green Turtle Dreaming. It was a collection of sounds and stories all cleverly intertwined to make about 12 short tracks. And on Track 4, who is that speaking a few words of Malay in the background? ME! I was spun out. It'd been so long since my encounter with Green Turtle Dreaming I'd forgotten, not about them, but about the recording definitely.
It's really nothing spectacular, just a few words that are reduced to exotic mouth sounds if you're not familiar with the language. But I just find it a tad HILARIOUS that they've got ME recorded in this thing, speaking Malay, when I'm one of the few island Malays who copped a lot of constant shit over the years for hardly knowing how to speak Malay! Isn't it ironic...don'tcha think?
Onto something totally unrelated, Batman Begins was so cool. Another one for my DVD collection list.
